Writing Task 1 Map Sample Answer

The maps illustrate the transformation of Laguna Beach over a period of four decades, from 1950 to 1990.
Overall, the area witnessed significant modernization, with beach huts replaced by a hotel featuring landscaped gardens and a swimming pool, while natural elements such as forest and sand dunes were removed to accommodate new facilities.

In 1950, Laguna Beach was largely undeveloped. To the east of the shoreline, a dense forest stretched alongside a narrow track that provided access to a row of modest beach huts. On the western side of these huts lay several sand dunes. By 1970, the entire woodland area had been cleared to establish a caravan park, and the track had been upgraded to a proper road. The beach huts themselves were demolished to make space for the construction of multiple villas.

In the subsequent two decades, further redevelopment occurred. The villas were replaced by a hotel accompanied by its own swimming pool, while the sand dunes were removed and replaced with landscaped gardens. Additionally, the caravan park made way for a spacious car park designated for hotel guests. The beachfront also saw the establishment of a surf school, enhancing the area’s appeal to tourists.
